Product Engineer

The Product Engineer is primarily involved with the development or improvement of actual product. Work may include creation of previously non-existent products or modifications of existing products.  Work includes selection and testing of materials, or components that will be suitable for finished product.  Responding to customer request for particular product or design is included in work.  May provide direction to associates for prototype development.

Tasks:                

New Product Development (NPD) Execution

  • Champion assigned projects through NCC's NPD process.  Achieve tollgate deliverables on time.
  •  Communicate with customers (both internal & external) to determine product requirements and needs.
  • Build safety, quality and productivity into product designs and fixtures to ensure cost-effective manufacturing.  Develop error-proof designs and fixtures.
  • Create bill of material (BOM) structure for new products, complete with accurate component part numbers and accurate BOM quantities.
  • Create labor and work center structure within BOM's.
  • Develop new product cost summaries using BOM data, standard cost data, and time observation analysis as necessary.
  • Manage engineering design costs and product design activities to achieve or exceed quoted pricing.
  • Work as part of a team to identify and resolve department problems; seek help when necessary.
  • Shows initiative- ability to manage work load with little supervision.

Engineering Documentation Process

  • Ensure completion of all necessary administrative items within the ECN process.
  • Manage engineering and product data. Ensure accuracy of data.  Confirm paper work is 100% complete, accurate, legible and returned to appropriate area immediately upon completion.
  • Create specifications for purchasing to procure goods and services necessary to meet finished product requirements.
  • Create any required documentation to support the production process to include drawings, work instructions, check lists ,etc.
  • Detail all specifications with the necessary Critical to Quality (CTQ) criteria.  CTQ data to assure all plant assembly can be executed efficiently and the critical product performance is attained.
  • Control departmental data through ECR system and Engineering database.

Engineering Competencies

  • Knowledge of metalworking/welding processes, equipment and capabilities.
  • Knowledge of design parameters and ASTM specifications for common materials (steel, aluminum) and finishes (plating and powder coating)used at NCC.
  • Knowledge of drafting standards and symbols including dimensioning, tolerances, and welding.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree in mechanical or industrial engineering preferred but not required.
  • Three to five years of full spectrum 3D design and implementation experience required.
  • Experience with Solid Works design system strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to create innovative designs that sell themselves.
  • Must be able to visually promote and communicate product designs to existing and new customers.
  • Must have strong project management experience to see product from design phase through implementation.
  • Strong organizational skills required.
  • Must adhere to company regulations and follow Code of Conduct.
  • Must maintain an attendance level that meets expectations.

Production Programs and Support

  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Participate in production meetings to communicate new product introductions, product revisions and coordinate activity with production team.
  • Maintain 5-S Program. Must keep work area clean and neat; complete daily cleaning schedules; maintain company 5S score.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement within operations supporting NCC's Lean Journey. Monitor work quality and productivity.

  • Sit for a minimum of 8 hours with limited breaks

  • Stoop, twist, bend and work overhead as necessary
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity
  • Operate computer extensively on a daily basis
  • Ability to prioritize projects and work on multiple tasks simultaneously
